My (recent) fear of flying, and the musical cure...

So I just got back from another trip to Aruba. I spent the entire month of August back home. Hung out with old friends, attended my best friend’s wedding, recorded a simple music video etc. Being on the island is so easy, but the travelling is what gets to you. It’s a 10+ hour flight from Amsterdam to Aruba. Flying back, via Bonaire, is another 11+ hours.

As I get older, I get increasingly nervous about flying. Whenever the plane takes off, those first seconds of flight, the thunderous roar of the engines and the violent shaking of the aircraft make me feel like we could suddenly drop out of the sky and crash to our deaths, either due to mechanical failure (some dude forgetting to screw a bolt tightly enough), or because of human error (stupid pilot not getting enough sleep the night before). Watching all those Air Crash investigation shows on National Geographic didn’t help much either.

This time in particular, we landed in Bonaire. I stayed back on the plane, waiting as they refueled the airbus, when all of a sudden there was an announcement from the cockpit. "Ladies and gentlemen, as the plane was landing it struck a bird in the left engine. Therefore we need to run some tests to ensure nothing critical has been damaged. This procedure will take an hour. We apologize for the delay". HA-HA...right…

Anyways, about 2 years ago I figured out that there's a certain music group which makes the best airplane-music, period! Bon Iver.. In particular, the self titled album from 2011. For some reason, this album really calms me down and actually helps me enjoy the flight. Basically I turn on the mp3 player, and listen to the album for the entire flight. In between I’ll watch a movie or two of course. But afterwards it’s right back to Bon Iver. It’s also perfect if you want to fall asleep and or get some rest during the flight.

This is my favourite Bon Iver song, Perth…
